Thank you for writing about your experiences. I wasn't familiar at all with the Federal jury process.

I disagree with you that jury duty is just an "inconvenience." It causes major hardships and problems for many people. Employers are not required by law to pay employees for the time missed on jury duty. What do people do who live paycheck-to-paycheck? What about those who run their own business?

Jury duty is a clear violation of our 13th Amendment right to be free from "involuntary servitude." Nowhere in the Constitution does it say the government has the right to force people to serve on a jury. People should *want* to serve when they can.

The government should increase the pay for jury service and make it voluntary. If they did this they'd get more than enough people who *want* to be there.

I wouldn't say I think *highly* of jury duty, but rather, that - perfect or not - it is our *duty* as citizens to serve. Just because we don't agree with the process isn't a reason to simply not serve. I suppose voting is the next duty that could conceivably have an effect on the process.

David:

I am curious why you think so highly of jury duty when the whole system you describe is anything but honest and anything but democratic in its purest sense.

Mind you I am not being sarcastic. I am truly curious.

Personally I would do it for the experience... but without expecting that anyone is truly interested in the truth.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with jury duty. As you mentioned, we do owe society in the matter, hence the word "duty". I have been summoned for jury duty at the federal level in Phoenix, Arizona and have never before been required to appear. Your story has now given me a prospective of what I should expect, of course without the Pope's condition. Again, thank you!

Thanks for sharing your experience in such detail. I recently received a summons for federal jury duty and I feel reassured now that I know what to expect.

Very, very interesting. I know 2 people who have served on juries - one a civil lawsuit and one a gang murder. I think it would be interesting to serve on one but I'd be scared to serve on a murder one for fear of retribution, plus I've read enough Grisham novels to make me paranoid!

Very interesting, David. Nice recap of your day. Isn't it funny how those people most educated and well suited to make a decision are the first to be eliminated from a jury pool? Just asking...
