One of the functions of the brain's reticular activating system is to filter out irrelevant stimuli. You don't notice silver Toyota Camrys until you buy one, or until you start considering buying one. Then you see silver Toyota Camrys everywhere.

The R.A.S. is the part of the brain responsible for motivation. Some scientists believe that you can "program" your R.A.S. to notice things that relate to, say, a specific goal. In that way, it's said, you will be aware of opportunities (or, metaphysically, "signs"). This kind of science gives credibility to the Law of Attraction. It also explains why, if you're diagnosed as having a fatal disease, you stop giving a shit about politics or Toyota Camrys.

In any case, of your alternatives ([1] despairing, and [2] deciding you don't care), (2) is the better choice. You can't know everything, so you decide what's important and become hypercognizant of pertinent information. That's why I don't get involved in politics. I'm leaving for Bora Bora some time in the next few days and I'm not coming back until the inauguration. My reticular activating system will be tuned to low-hanging fruit and finishing my novel.... M

Ah, and then either 1) despair over not knowing how little you know, or 2) feeling better by deciding you don't care.

I've found that after your first couple adult-onset cognizance building experiences, you gain a sort of meta-cognizance: to become aware of how little of which you are aware.
